How to measure your feet

It is very important to measure your feet accurately, especially when first buying barefoot shoes, or first trying a new brand of shoe. This is because different brands and even styles within brands have different measurements, so you cannot always assume you will be the same size.

We recommend measuring both feet, as many people have one foot slightly larger than the other, so you want to ensure the shoes you buy fit your bigger foot.

We also recommend re-measuring your feet every year or so, especially while you are transitioning to barefoot shoes. As your feet get used to being barefoot, they will naturally expand as they have room to splay and move.

When selecting shoes make sure that the type, size and width match your foot size. The length of the inside of your shoe should be longer than your foot and your toes should not (under any circumstances) touch the inside tip of the shoe, the so-called leeway.

Here are two ways to measure your feet:

1 - Wall method for measuring feet

  • Place a blank A4-sized paper on a flat, smooth and even surface, right up against a wall
  • Mark on the paper (approximately in the middle) where your heel will go
  • Step onto the paper with all your weight on the leg and the heel right up against the wall
  • Use a pen/pencil to mark the farthest point from the heel (beware, it may not always be the big toe) - an easy way to ensure you mark this correctly is to use a thick book placed on the floor up against your longest toe, then step away and mark a line where the book sits.
  • Measure the distance between the heel and line with a ruler (the difference can be ± 0.5 cm)
  • The number obtained is the length of the foot
  • Add an extra 0.5-1.2 cm (ideal leeway) to the length of the foot, and you will get the ideal size of your shoe.
  • You can obtain the width measurement by marking on the paper each side of the foot at the widest point and measuring the distance between these two points.
  • Find your shoe size per the above measurements by referring to the size chart for each product on our website.
  • The size chart indicates the inner length and width of our barefoot shoes in centimetres.

2 - Tracing method for measuring feet

  • Place a blank A4-sized paper on a flat, smooth and even surface
  • Use a pen or pencil to trace all the way around your foot, drawing as close as possible to your foot
  • Measure the distance on your drawn foot between the the heel and the longest toe with a ruler
  • The number obtained is about 0.5 cm greater than the actual length of the foot
  • Add up to an extra 0.7 cm (the ideal leeway is between 0.5-1.2 cm) to the length of the foot, and you will get the ideal size of your shoe.
  • Also measure the distance on your drawn foot at the widest part to get your width - again this will be about 0.5 cm greater than the actual width of the foot
